Self Sacrifice

One should never sacrifice the true self for any other good. There is no greater good for you than your self.

As Jesus remarks, what good is it for a man to save his "life" if he looses his "soul". Note that life and soul are two words for the same thing. What Jesus means is that one must sometimes let go of what one mistakenly thinks of as one's life and soul and self in order to affirm and preserve what is in fact one's life and soul and self. Delusions and pretence must give way in favour of reality and integrity.

Jesus says that in order to follow Him, we must be willing to take up our cross and "loose (or forget) ourselves" so as to find the truth and to preserve our real lives.
